Vietnam Says Cooperative Appointment Alphabet Remove Toxic Content
Google's parent company, Alphabet, will work with the Vietnamese Government to combat illegal and "toxic" information from its platform.

The agreement was made when Chairman Alphabet Eric Schmidt and Vietnamese Prime Minister Xuan Phuc met in Hanoi.

"Erich Schmidt said he would be very cooperative with Vietman to remove 'toxic' information, violating Vietman law and considering opening a representative office in the country," the Vietnamese government said in a written statement,
from Reuters.

On the other hand, Google says it has no plans to immediately open an office in Vietnam. But the search engine giant insists it has a clear policy on content removal requests from the government.

"We rely on the government to inform us of content that they believe is illegal through official processes, if appropriate, we will limit it after a thorough review," said Google spokesman Taj Meadows.

The agreement between Google and Vietnam is quite interesting, considering that the country has been highlighted because it is considered only a little tolerate differences of opinion.

Human rights groups and Western countries have criticized Vietnam's move, which has captured anti-government bloggers.

Vietnam in February, complained of "poisonous" content and anti-government content on Facebook and the YouTube app. The country is pressuring domestic companies to hold their ads, until such social media companies find solutions to address such content.

Furthermore, Schmidt not only met with the Vietnamese Prime Minister but also with a number of important Vietnamese figures from various fields, including singer and activist Mai Khoi.

"I told Schmidt about Vietnam's internet censorship issue and he said he knew about it and would try to improve internet freedom here," Khoi said.

Vietnam does have only a small part in the business operations of companies like Facebook and Google, but is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia.

In addition, the country is also a hot target for investment for various global consumer brands. According to Isobar Vietnam's domestic agency data, YouTube and Facebook control two-thirds of the digital media market share in Vietnam.
