An
example is to turn on the air conditioner (AC) when a passenger enters
the cab, or supply the power required to power an aircraft engine.
APU devices also provide power reserves for cabin, cockpit, and hydraulic systems when flying.
The APU made Honeywell that now become standard fittings on Airbus A320 aircraft is type 131-9A.
Previously, buyers of Airbus A320 aircraft were given the option to select the type of APU they wanted to use. But now, Honeywell's APU 131-9A has become the standard in all of Airbus's flagship narrowbody aircraft.
"Honeywell,
together with Airbus offers A320 customers with APUs that are
efficient, safe, and convenient to support passenger experiences while
flying," said Brian Sill, President of Engines and Power Systems at
Honeywell Aerospace.
Honeywell itself has just sent the 5000 APU 131-9A to Airbus. This marks the number of family APU 131-9 to 11,000 units with a total of 11 million flight hours.
The APU family 131-9 in addition to being used by Airbus on the A320 aircraft is also used by Boeing in its B737 series.
