Telegram is a widely used platform in Iran with over 40 million users out of a total population of 80 million people. Telegram plays an important role in anti-government protests. However, later, there was also a mass supporting the Iranian government.
Yesterday, Iran's Telecommunications Minister Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi wrote CEO Telegram's message and founder Pavel Durov via Twitter, asking him to monitor Telegram users more closely.
"A Telegram channel promotes violence, the use of Molotov cocktails, armed demonstrations and social unrest, now is the right time to limit such messages via Telegram," he wrote.
A few hours later, Durov retaliated, saying that Telegram would take the government's request seriously.
"The call to violence is prohibited by Telegram regulations, if confirmed, we will block the channel, regardless of size or political affiliation," Durov said via Twitter.
After that, Durov apparently managed to confirm that a channel in Telegram did encourage violent activity and announced that Telegram would suspend the channel.
