The use of Windows 10 will start in 2020 and is expected to be completed by the end of 2022 or early 2023. The cost of using Windows 10 is estimated at € 50 million.
Munich was once seen as a champion of open-source software. The city gained that reputation after 2003, its government decided to use Linux-based desktop, which came to be known as LiMux, and other open-source software.
Munich Mayor Dieter Reiter said they decided to re-use Windows 10 because they wanted to simplify government computer management. By using Windows 10 he said, city council no longer need to use two operating systems simultaneously.
It is true that even though some computers in Munich using LiMux, there is a small computer that uses Windows. The reason is to use applications that are not compatible with Linux.
"We always use a combined system and we have a chance to use just one system.Using two operating systems is not at all economical," Dieter said in a meeting with board members.
In addition to simplifying computer systems, Reiter said, the decision to re-use Windows was taken to improve Munich's IT performance, which is considered unsatisfactory.
