Microsoft Acquisition of Social Media VR

AltspaceVR
Microsoft has acquired AltspaceVR, a virtual reality social network that holds various events in the virtual world from stand-up comedy to watching the presidential debate of the United States. In July, AltspaceVR mentioned that they were threatened to close due to lack of funds. Then, AltspaceVR discussed with various parties.

Initially, Ocull Palmer Luckey co-founder seemed interested in saving AltspaceVR, though ultimately, Microsoft became the party that acquired Altspace.

The AltspaceVR team is now part of Microsoft. "With the AltspaceVR team, we can not wait to build the largest mixed reality community in the world," said Alex Kipman, HoloLens inventor at Microsoft.

"AltspaceVR will not change, Microsoft is only interested in maintaining a community that uses AltspaceVR to interact with new and old friends," said a Microsoft spokesman.

"In the first few months, we will focus on developing our community and ensuring AltspaceVR remains a suitable place for people to come together in a virtual world."

AltspaceVR once invited comedians Reggie Watts and Drew Carey. They also invited Bill Nye. AltspaceVR even worked with NBC News to hold live broadcasts on US presidential elections.

Since 2015 AltspaceVR has become an open social VR platform that can be accessed through various headsets, such as Oculus Rift, Gear VR, HTC Vive and other VR headsets. Now Microsoft says they do not plan to stop AltspaceVR from working with other companies' VR platforms.
