Apple working with TSMC to produce MicroLED panels for Apple Watch and AR accessories

Apple is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) to produce small MicroLED panels for next generation Apple Watch and products related to Augmented Reality (AR).

The MicroLED display panel will be produced in two sizes, namely 1.3 inches to 1.4 inches for the Apple Watch model, and 0.7 inches to 0.8 inches for wearable AR devices. The production of MicroLED panels for Apple Watch reportedly began earlier this year.

MicroLED is a display technology of the future and is referred to as an upgraded version of OLED that has been used by many high-end smartphones, such as Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 +. The main difference between these two technologies is the materials used.

MicroLED panel is claimed to use different materials and has the ability to present a better viewing angle and color display. However, this panel still has issues related to the production of MicroLED that need to be handled, ie the cost of production.

The cost of producing MicroLED panels is four times up to six times higher when compared to OLED production costs, the panels currently used by Apple Watch and iPhone.

Therefore, MicroLED is predicted to be used only by premium devices in the coming months, but then used by other devices.
