NASA says asteroid Greek god will approach the earth ahead of Christmas

Asteroids are closer to the earth
NASA confirmed the rumors of a giant asteroid approaching Earth at the end of December 2017. According to the US space agency, the asteroid will approach orbit from December 16, 2017, exactly one week before Christmas. The asteroid is estimated to be about 3 miles long. The space object was named "3200 Phaethon" taken on behalf of the Greek god.

According to legend the god caused great damage on Earth. But still, NASA claims 3200 Phaethon will not damage the Earth like the original god.

3200 Phaethon was discovered NASA since December 2007 ago. He is believed to be part of the Geminid meteor shower that will occur on 13 December.

"It will pass a distance of 6.5 million miles from Earth, still far and even 27 times farther than Earth's distance to the Moon," NASA said in an official statement.

However, NASA acknowledged that Phaethon's 3200 is the nearest dangerous "near-Earth" asteroid if not overcome.
Therefore, scientists at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory are planning to use the asteroid 3D model to re-examine its shape.
