This feature is a key feature as it is the brains behind the mobile artificial intelligence platform of Kirin 970, allowing cloud-based AI and AI on devices to run seamlessly together.
Huawei said the two AI technologies would complement each other, providing a better user experience to smartphone owners by making the process faster, delivering more personal data and understanding the world better.
AI is usually synonymous with virtual assistants like Siri from Apple and Google Assistant. However, Huawei has not yet launched its own virtual assistant. They show off how quickly the process of introducing objects by Kirin 970 thanks to the NPU.
Kirin 970 can process 2,000 images per minute. This performance increase is quite significant when compared with other processors with similar capabilities.
Huawei explained, NPU will be used to run cloud-based applications in real-time on smartphones. Many of the advantages provided by the NPU focus on the feature of photography on mobile phones.
For example if you still have to wait for Prisma application to convert the photo into a work of art with NPU, the change of the picture can happen in real-time.
The existence of the object recognition feature means the phone can know what objects are in front of the camera and can adjust the camera mode to take pictures.
The existence of the NPU is expected to encourage the development of innovative applications that use AI on devices, Huawei said. However, developers remain free to choose the use of intelligence on the device or cloud-based.
Just like the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835, Kirin 970 is made with a 10nm manufacturing process. The processor has 5.5 million transistors, more than the Snapdragon 835, which has 3.1 million transistors.
Kirin 970 has 8 CPU core and GPU with 12 core. Huawei claims, its new processor has 25 percent greater power and 50 times better efficiency than quad-core Cortex-A73 processor.
