Researchers involved in the project said this achievement should enable the US $ 330 billion chip industry to stay on the path of Moore's Law, which predicts that the number of transistors on a chip will double every few years.
Quoting Venture Beat, IBM presented the details of his research at the Symposia 2017 conference on VLSI Technology and Circuits in Kyoto, Japan.
The development of this project lasted less than two years since IBM researchers made a nanometer chip test node with 20 billion transistors. A nanometer means a millionth of a meter, and a 5 nanometer device is equivalent to just a few thick atoms.
Currently, the most advanced semiconductor chip uses the FinFET process with a 10 nanometer-wide circuit. Companies like Intel can build chips with 10 or 15 billion transistors using that process.
