Apple is reportedly acquiring startups that produce lenses for augmented reality glasses

Apple is rumored to have acquired a startup whose focus is producing lenses for glasses of augmented reality (AR). This step makes the efforts of Apple producing glasses AR increasingly real. In its official description, Apple confirmed that it had acquired Akonia Holographics, a startup based in Colorado, United States. But they did not explain what products will be developed using technology from Akonia.

"Apple buys smaller companies from time to time, and we generally do not discuss our purpose or plans, " wrote Apple in its official description, according to a statement from Reuters.

Akonia is a startup founded in 2012 by a group of scientists holography. They initially focus to holographic data storage before it changed its focus to making the glasses display for AR. Akonia claimed their display technology, boast clever glass lenses are thin, transparent, and displays full-color display and bright. They also have more than 200 patents related to systems and holographic materials.

Last year, Bloomberg reports that Apple developed the AR goggles that will be launched into the market early in the year 2020. Apple also unveiled the rest AR for iPhone and iPad in the past year, and CEO of Apple Tim Cook calls AR as a technology that will grow big.

 "This is one of the great things we will look back and marvel at the time of its inception, " said Cook about AR on a conference call with investors last year.

Apple does have a history of the acquisition of a small company whose technology will appear in a new product a few years later. Like when Apple acquired Israel company, PrimeSense in 2013 are 3D sensor technology used in the Facial Recognition feature courtesy of iPhone X.
