The company just released the first "Extended Reality (XR)" Snapdragon XR1, and it is a chipset that has been specially designed for AR and VR headsets. And the Snapdragon XR1 chip will be an on-a-chip system with major processing units, graphics processors, security functions and components to handle artificial intelligence tasks.
This chip may be somewhat cheaper for companies to build an entry-level version of augmented and virtual reality. For the first appearance is expected to start appearing later this year or early 2019. Qualcomm's Snapdragon XR1 chip reported for augmented reality and virtual is unlikely to generate much revenue for the company in the near future.
This product is specifically designed to make it easy for various hardware manufacturers to create cheap, powerful, and energy-efficient headsets. XR1 will be supported by such as 4K to 60 fps video, 3D overlay, dual screen and popular graphics APIs OpenGL, OpenCL and Vulkan.
Qualcomm also wants to be the first company to develop a virtual chip and augmented reality. And Qualcomm will probably continue to make additional investments to support Snapdragon XR1 and its successors.
With increasing AR and VR technology, Qualcomm decided to build high-end chips on the XR line. Qualcomm may be looking for a variety of ways besides producing phone chips and seeking new revenue because growth in smartphones is running low and competition is increasing.
