Amazon now lets users use Alexa to make phone calls and send messages on tablets

Amazon now lets users use Alexa to make phone calls and send messages on tablets. Thus, users no longer need Echo to be able to chat with other Alexa users.

Tablets that are compatible with this capability include Android tablets, iPads, and Amazon Fire tablets. To take advantage of this capability, users must download the latest updates for the latest Alexa app, which Amazon has started to release.

To set up the Fire HD 10 tablet in Hands-Free mode, the user only needs to instruct Alexa to make a phone call. On other Fire tablets that are not yet supported with Hands-Free mode, tap the Home button first, then tell Alexa to call.

On other devices, users need to access the Alexa app, then Conversations, select a contact and press the phone. Alexa users can now receive phone calls on tablets through the Alexa app from March 12th.

In the meantime, the available Amazon Drop In feature lets users connect tablets and other Echo devices in the user's home, so the tablet can work like a large walkie-talkie device.
