Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced the update via his page, calling the next update to support the company's focus during 2018, to make Facebook not only fun, also good for users and the public.
The update lets users see more information that appears in News Feed from publishers around them. This is due to the use of geographical data by Facebook, to determine which news publishers are in the user's geographic location.
As a result, publishers who are followed by users or shared by colleagues, will get a priority level of new appearances in News Feed. This is considered good for local publishers who tend not to be able to reach wider sources, and Zuckerberg hopes this update will help people be more vigilant about their surroundings.
In addition, Facebook is also testing a new section called Today In, allowing users to connect more in depth with news and information from their area. Still in the testing process, this feature can only be used by users in some regions of the United States.
The new In Today feature testing areas are New Orleans, Louisiana; Little Rock, Arkansas; Billings, Montana; Peoria, Illinois; Olympia, Washington; and Binghamton, New York.
Newly released on a platform on the United States, Facebook also announced plans to expand the scope of this update in more countries in the coming year.
