Google confirmed that they invested in Go-Jek, Indonesia's online transport startup which is a competitor of Uber and Grab.

Last week, Google reportedly invested a $ 1.2 billion investment in Go-Jek along with Meituan-Dianping from China and Temasek from Singapore. Go-Jek has been discussing the investment since last April. With this latest fresh funding, Go-Jek now has a valuation of US $ 4 billion.

This is the first investment from Google in Indonesia after they invested in India in December 2017. Go-Jek not only offers transportation services such as ojeks and taxis, but also other services such as courier, delivery of food and as well as mobile payments. In Indonesia, Go-Jek is said to dominate the market, defeating Uber and Grab.

Indonesia is a country with the largest economy in Southeast Asia, an area with more than 600 million consumers and a rising rate of internet adoption.

"Go-Jek is led by a strong Indonesian management team and has proven how they use technology to make life easier for Indonesians," said Caesar Sengupta, VP of Next Billion, Google. The Next Billion team is a team focused on developing countries.

Currently, Go-Jek is only active in Indonesia. Even so, before this, they have mentioned that they plan to enter other countries using mobile payment service, Go-Pay.
