Both Afghan Chief Executive Abdullah and his deputy spokesman made a tweet saying that WhatsApp and Telegram would not be blocked after Dr. Abdullah met President Ashraf Ghani.
Now, this blocking problem has indeed been resolved. However, it remains unknown what government agency wants to block both messages.
Although the Ministry of Communications and Information Technology is the party that sent a request to Telegram and WhatsApp, a New York Times source said that the National Directorate of Security, the Afghan intelligence service, is the party who actually wants to block it.
The reasons for blocking WhatsApp and Telegram vary, ranging from a sense of security concern to the quality of services of both applications.
